Natural disasters seem to be a constant occurrence in Indonesia. They happen suddenly and without warning, triggering panic and anxiety among those they affect. Circumstances like these require immediate steps to address emergency conditions.
Nurani Dunia Foundation strives its utmost to assist disaster victims to cope and rebuild. In facing emergency conditions in disaster areas, Nurani Dunia Foundation acts quickly and works together with a variety of partners, including government, the business community, and civil society.
The emergency management programs conducted by Nurani Dunia Foundation in areas affected by natural disaster include:
Aid to Earthquake and Tsunami Victims
Earthquake and Tsunami in Pangandaran (July 2006)
The tectonic earthquake and resulting tsunami that hit the southern coast of the island of Java on July 17, 2006, resulted in the deaths of hundreds and destroyed many houses and public facilities. Indonesia Peduli, which at the time was concentrating its efforts in Yogyakarta and Central Java, immediately sent logistical assistance to the Pangandaran area. This logistical aid consisted of food, water, and kitchen supplies.
Earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java (May 2006)
The tectonic earthquake of May 27, 2006, in the provinces of Yogyakarta and Central Java prompted the members of Indonesia Peduli to come together once again on May 28, 2006, to work together to provide assistance to victims. The meeting was attended by representatives of a variety of organizations and individuals. These included PT. Coca-Cola, PT. Unilever Indonesia, Uli Peduli Foundation, General Electric, GE Volunteers, PT. Nestle Indonesia, Cinta Anak Bangsa Foundation, Visi Anak Bangsa Foundation, Indonesia Business Links (IBL), Nurani Dunia Foundation, Pancasila University, KAGAMA, Exxon Mobil, Combiphar, Air Putih Foundation, Ericsson, Bapeda, Rotary International, Migrant Workers Union, Indosat, KPAI, PT. Anugerah Pharmasi Lestari (APL), IBEKA Foundation, EXPA, KKS Melati, Mitra Hospital, Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialists Association (PAPDI), Medical Relief and others.
For the duration of the program, the office of the Nurani Dunia Foundation was designated as secretariat headquarters, and the Pancasila University auditorium in Central Jakarta was used as a warehouse for goods and supplies. Indonesia Peduli in Jakarta coordinated supplies sent from other parties and organizations, and also purchased necessary supplies and sent them to Yogyakarta and Central Java.
Indonesia Peduli also established a post in Bantul to serve as headquarters for the coordination of humanitarian action in the area. The post was located at Gedung Pendopo Badan Penyuluhan Pertanian (BPP) Among Kismo Sewon, Jalan Parang Tritits
Km 4,5, Bantul, Yogyakarta.
Indonesia Peduli’s initial activities in Yogyakarta and Central Java were focused on:
Medical Outreach
Indonesia Peduli mobilized doctors to attend to sick and injured victims. It also provided support in the form of ambulance services and medicines. The strategy taken on the ground was the formation of groups of doctors who toured villages and neighborhoods to treat victims on location, as in the immediate aftermath transportation of victims to hospitals was difficult, and communities were not familiar with hospitals. Documented cases included 3,455 people who received emergency treatment during a two week period in Yogyakarta and Central Java.
Indonesia Peduli also worked to collect and distribute needed medicines and medical equipment and supplies. Medicines and medical equipment were collected and besides being used by the volunteer doctors, they were also channeled to several hospitals and clinics in the area that were undersupplied.
Emergency Shelter Construction
The scale of the destruction of buildings in the earthquake, and the subsequent heavy downpours, left victims in dire need of tents and tarpaulins for emergency shelter. Indonesia Peduli began immediate distribution of tarpaulins and began construction of shelters made of bamboo. Bamboo shelters were intended for the most vulnerable such as infants and small children, pregnant and nursing women, the elderly, and the infirmed. In many locations, mattresses and pillows were also distributed to those most vulnerable.
Public Kitchen Construction
To support communities working together to clean up and sort through debris and rubble left by the quake, Indonesia Peduli set up public kitchens in more than 50 places in Bantul. In a cooperative atmosphere, the women worked to prepare and cook food in the public kitchens while the men worked to clear debris. Logistical needs for the public kitchens and the debris cleanup efforts were supported by Indonesia Peduli. Supplies and tools for debris cleanup included gloves, work boots, pushcarts, shovels, rope, etc. Communities also used their own tools they had on hand.
Earthquake and Tsunami in Aceh (2004)
On December 26, 2004, Aceh and North Sumatra were struck by an extraordinarily powerful earthquake and tsunami. The earthquake, measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale, was followed by a tsunami that resulted in the largescale destruction of buildings. The severity of the disaster prompted the concern of all, both within and outside the country, as individuals and organizations poured into Aceh and North Sumatra. Assistance and expressions of concern came in every form and from every corner of the globe, and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono declared Aceh and North Sumatra a national disaster zone.
At the time of the earthquake in Aceh, Indonesia Peduli was preparing the shipment of supplies to Nabire following the earthquake that had happened there. Soon after the supplies were sent, Indonesia Peduli began activities to ensure assistance for Aceh through March 2005.
To accommodate the high amount of aid and supplies coming in for Aceh, Indonesia Peduli was able to gather and prepare supplies for shipment in Central Jakarta using an auto showroom space loaned by PT. Astra International (Jl. Proklamasi No. 35), and a house in South Jakarta (Jl. Pejaten No. 5). Both posts were staffed with Indonesia Peduli volunteers.
Volunteers arrived from all parts of Jakarta, from many different circles, including concerned individuals, white collar workers, and university students and junior high and high school students. The many volunteers, NGOs and businesses that joined the Indonesia Peduli activities included people from KKS Melati, Indonesia Tragedy Center (ITC), PT. Bosung, Indonesia Business Link, the J.W. Marriott Hotel, BMW Indonesia, Talisman (Asia) Ltd., and others. Many assisted in the receipt, repacking and dispatching of relief supplies.
Assistance channeled by the community through Indonesia Peduli came in a variety of forms. Some came in material form such as food, water, medication, communication equipment, clothing, kitchen equipment, and cash donations. These were sent to Aceh through local and national organizations such as SORAK Aceh, Yayasan Komunitas Partisipatif (YKP), Dompet Dhuafa, Walhi, and others.
Earthquake in Nabire, Papua (2004)
In 2004, the district of Nabire in Papua was shaken several times by earthquakes. This quake resulted in the destruction of houses, killing 32 people, with another 33 sustaining severe injuries, and a further 153 with less serious injuries.
In response to the emergency, Nurani Dunia, along with the private sector and other NGOs joined together in a consortium called Indonesia Peduli, for the purpose of collecting supplies and funds donated to help Nabire. At the time, members of the Indonesia Peduli for Nabire consortium included Nurani Dunia Foundation, PT. Unilever Indonesia, Prakarsa Penguatan Filantropi (PPF), RCTI Peduli, Exxon Mobil, PT. Nestlè Indonesia and the Indonesian Navy. Donors included PT. PLN (Persero), PT. Freeport Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, Sampoerna, and Matahari. In addition to these, earthquake victims also received soccer and volleyballs and school notebooks. Short-term assistance programs were also put in place, including the construction of the prototype of an earthquake resistant house, drilling of artesian wells, and facilities for the production of drinking water. These activities began in December 2004 and continued through January 2005.
