The rebuilding of Cidokom Elementary School 01 was started because of the
initiative taken by Civil Engineering students from Pancasila Univeristy’s
School of Engineering. In 2004, while the students were doing their Social
Service, they visited the Nurani Dunia office to discuss their wish to renovate
the roof of Cidokom Elementary School 01. However, the building was very moldy
and worn away with age. Nurani Dunia proposed to demolish the current building
and rebuild it. Finally, on September 11, 2004, after many long discussions
and obtaining the initial funding for the project from Bank BRI, the first
cornerstone of the new building was laid. During the rebuilding process, the
group of students that initiated this project took on the role of project
directors and daily operational supervisors. While the school was under
reconstruction, daily school activities were held in an emergency school
building made of bamboo and rooms sectioned off by woven bamboo dividers.
Because
of support from many different companies and organizations, like West Java and
Banten PLN (State Electrical Company), the National Education Department, Bank
Indonesia, Bazis Bank Indonesia, and
Himpunan Konsultan
Hukum Pasar Modal
(the association of market financial consultants), along with group efforts from
the people of Cidokom Village, the project was about 70% complete by the
begining of 2007. However, because of a lack of funding, the project was
brought to a hault a few times to wait for an agency that was willing to help.
This is the reason why the rebuilding process was a slow one. Nevertheless,
even in these unfinished conditions, teaching and studying resumed in this
semi-complete building.
After
stopping for several months, the rebuilding process was finally able to continue
thanks to support from Humanikasih Wom Finance. On July 6, 2007, the Cidokom
Elementary School 01 building, with six classrooms, a teachers’ office, a
principal’s office, a teachers’ room, a library, a bathroom and a place to wash
hands, was officially dedicated by all of the donors.
In
response to the new building, school principal Mr.
Djarnudji
predicted that this school would be the best school in the entire subdistrict.
Besides
enabling the construction of the school to be completed,
Humanikasih Wom
Finance
also provided the school with desks, chairs, boards, and new teacher lockers.
The Pancasila University School of Engineering also contributed two computer
units and free teacher training for the new teachers.
This
development model, involving contributions and help from many different side,s
once again proves its strength. A school that was beyond repair was rebuilt
with participation from the private sector, BUMN (State Owned Enterprises), the
government, students and the community. This development model is necessary to
encourage improvement in Indonesian education.
